Australia fined messaging app Telegram after the federal eSafety Commission said the company delayed responding to questions about child abuse and the spread of extremist content. In March 2024 the commission sought formal responses from several social media platforms — YouTube, X and Facebook — as well as from Telegram and Reddit. The eSafety Commission blamed those services for not doing enough to prevent child abuse material and the dissemination of extremist material. The fine targets Telegram specifically for its delay in replying to the commission’s inquiries, part of a broader government effort to hold platforms accountable for online harms.
